Burials Register

The 1662 Act of Uniformity gave rise to a Presbyterian movement, which Rev. Nathaniel Stephens helped support in Hinckley. In 1783, Rev. William Severn established a Unitarian Chapel in Hinckley.

The Burials Register gives details of those people who had ceremonies at the chapel and who were buried there or elsewhere (as indicated in the Burial Location field).

Burials at Hinckley Cemetery (opened in 1858) were recorded in the Ashby Road Cemetery Registers.  They are on microfiche at Wigston Records Office.  The records are often 'echoed' in the St Mary parish.

For example, the entry for "BURTON Joseph - 80 - Burial 25 Jul 1899 Hinckley Cemetery Died at Derby Road" has a mirror in the St Mary register:

"[1899] Joseph Burton [abode] Hinckley [buried] 25th of July [age] 80 years [ceremony by] Dissenting Minister"

The parish register burial records don't have all of the information contained in the Great Meeting Burials Index.  Also, burials in the Great Meeting Burials Index dated prior to the opening of the Ashby Road cemetery do not appear.  These burials were within the Great Meeting grounds.  For example, the entry “BILLINGS Thomas - 69 - Burial 2 Apr 1821 Great Meeting".
