Alrewas, All Saints register: a parish newsletter

The Alrewas baptism register of the late 18th century seems to have been used by the curate, John Edmonds, as a kind of parish newsletter in which he outlined events of local and national significance. Included in the Alrewas records are descriptions of an air gun attack on King George III on 29 October 1795, an earthquake that was felt in Staffordshire on 18 November 1795, and local bread riots that mirrored what was happening nationwide at the time and which resulted from food shortages. Rev. Edmonds noted such other minor events as the burial of an overweight parishioner and the deaths of three cows from lightning.
