Order Books Removals & Settlements 1678 – 1832

This recordset is an extract from all the Order Books of all 10,500 Cases for the period 1678 -1832.

These books have in them Quarter Session Poor Law cases that were sent back to court because there was a dispute of some sort.   Most disputes were between parishes, for instance, where the parish named in a removal case disputed the first parish's claim and challenged its decision to remove a person to it.

 Notes

Dates: In the early Removal Orders, no dates are given other than the year and session of the hearing; later, the recorded date is when the Overseers originally made the order of the respondent parish.

Decision Descriptions:

·       Confirmed = the court finding in favour of the respondent parish.

·       Discharged = the court finding in favour of the appellant parish.

·       Respites or further respites = the court defers to the next session.

·       Quashed = the court rejects the application, usually because of an informality.

·       Vacate = the court annuls or cancels the case.

Page: Is the page number in the order books.  Not all books are numbered.

Note: In some instances, cases that have been ‘Respited’ are not mentioned again in the next sessions.

Where the wife appears at the head of the order and the husband's name is after hers, he is there for information only; he is not included in the order.

‘With child’ in the note’s column means that she is pregnant.
