Leicester Union Emigrants Register 1905-1921

Like many Poor Law Unions, the Leicester Union helped some people relying on them for support gain a new life abroad by paying for or assisting in their passage to the colonies (mainly Canada).

A Register recording these details of the emigrants was kept and now survives in the Leicestershire County Record Office.

The register gives their details, forename and surname, ages, and, where provided, the addresses of the emigrants. It also offers details of their destination and, where given, to whom they are going.

Each entry contains the date the Union decided to assist the emigrant and, in many cases, the date of their sailing.  Where no sailing date is given, the record is indicated with a decision date.  Where a sailing date is listed, the sailing date is recorded.

The entries in this index give the most essential details from the Register. Further information can be found by consulting the original record in the Record Office., where the fares cost can be found.
