Discover more about Queensland Passport Registers 1926-1939
The Queensland Passport Registers 1926-1939 indexes were compiled from records created and used by the immigration department of Queensland relating to passport clearance registers and passport receipts.
These indexes record the names of immigrants arriving in Queensland as well as their later disembarkation from the state.
The passport clearance registers used to compile this index date from 1926 to 1935. These records show details such as the immigrant’s name, schedule number, the ship name, date of departure, reason that the vessel was leaving, whether it was returning, and other details. However, in August-September 1929, they began to also record details such as the number of souls it carried and other remarks.
Passport receipts, on the other hand, date between 1930 and 1939, and consist of duplicates of passport clearances. These were called Joint Commonwealth and State Migration Scheme Passport Clearance to Assisted Migrants. These clearances were issued by the immigration department in Brisbane, which were presented at the Passport Office. Each one of these records contain the immigrant’s name, the date of their arrival, the name of the ship, and a statement that there is no objection to a passport being issued. Some receipt stubs also recorded remarks regarding the ship and date of departure as well as the time it was expected to be away.
When searching the index, remember to check all possible spelling variations, and keep in mind that all first names are abbreviated as they appeared in the original records. It is also worth noting that any names of Asian individuals who were listed on these passage certificates were kept as they appeared in the original record and were not anglicised.
