Sheffield City Archives and Local Studies Library

We are pleased to be working in partnership with Sheffield Archives and Local Studies Library. The Sheffield Archives and Local Studies Library collects, preserves and makes available information from the 12th century to the present.

As well as collections of local church records, school records, electoral registers, newspapers and maps the library and archive also produces research guides on specialist areas of research including World War One, Tracing Missing Persons, Workhouses and Gang Wars etc. as well as several Community History guides of local areas.

An image library of 60,000 images is another fantastic resource for anyone interested in the history of the Sheffield area.

Crime Courts & Quarter Session records

From stealing pigeons and waistcoats to being drunk in charge of a pony, these crime and quarter session records allow you to glimpse into the crime scene in Sheffield from the early 1700s and discover if your ancestor was ever convicted of a crime.

The Crime Courts and Convicts collection includes over 200,000 records of both perpetrators and those who helped bring them to justice in Sheffield between 1737 and 1938.

The Sheffield Quarter Session records also allow you to browse through over 11,000 records of those guilty of crimes and their victims between 1880 and 1912.

Sheffield Air Raid Casualties, 1940-1941

If your ancestor was killed in the German air raids on Sheffield in either 1940 or 1941 then you may discover them in this record set.

The main Sheffield Blitz occurred between the 12th and 15th December 1940 and as well as the fatal casualties listed in this collection, there were also 1,500 people injured and 40,000 made homeless.
