Derbyshire Family History Society

We are delighted to be working in partnership with the Derbyshire Family History Society which aims to assist members in tracing their family history, and to collect, preserve and make available archival material relating to family and local history in Derbyshire

The Derbyshire Family History Society is a registered charity no. 517162 and has around 500 members worldwide.  Our main aims are to assist members to trace their family history, and to collect, preserve and make available archival material relating to family and local history in Derbyshire. 

Monthly meetings are held at Derby’s Museum of Making on the third Wednesday in the month and cater for a wide range of interests and usually include a speaker on a subject related to family or local history.  Further details are available on our website: http://www.dfhs.org.uk

Vital records

The Derbyshire Family History Society have made valuable contributions to our vast collection of vital records for the Derbyshire area. This includes birth, baptism, death and burial records and registrar indexes. If you have ancestors from the Derbyshire area, then these record sets are essential for your family history research.

Derbyshire Census Returns, 1801-1831

If you have roots in the county of Derbyshire, you can now explore this collection of census records from 1801-1831 to uncover new details about your ancestors in the area. These records may help you discover new details about your ancestors such as their age, occupation, birth year, parish and other members of their household.

Derbyshire Hospital Admissions and Deaths, 1855-1913

Thanks to our partnership with Derbyshire Family History Society, you can now discover hospital admission and death records from Victoria Memorial Cottage Hospital and the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary.

In the records you will find your ancestor’s age, residence, reason for admittance to the hospital, admission date and whether he/she was cured, operated on or died. Use the keyword field to search by cause of death or residence.

Derbyshire Workhouse Reports

If your family fell on hard times while living in Derbyshire, then these 19th century workhouse records can help you find out more about their time in the workhouse.

These records cover a short period between June and December 1842, but include 2,235 names and associated information.

Additional information from the society

There are several ongoing projects, from parish registers, non-conformist records, and will recording, to the transcribing of other data for inclusion on findmypast.co.uk.

The Society’s permanent archive is housed at 95, Nottingham Road Derby, which holds all the society’s reference material and is manned by knowledgeable volunteers to help visitors with their research. We are open to members and non-members every Tuesday and Thursday 10am – 4pm and Saturdays by appointment.

The society magazine is published quarterly and contains many interesting articles about our hobby. It is sent out in a digital format to any new members. Books and other items are available via the bookshop on our website.

Derbyshire FHS is a member of the Family History Federation.
